Route Overview
The Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong HSR runs 142 km from Guangzhou South through Dongguan Humen, Shenzhen North, and Shenzhen Futian to Hong Kong West Kowloon. The full corridor opened in September 2018 and is an important cross-boundary rail link in the Greater Bay Area. Hong Kong West Kowloon uses a co-location arrangement, but travelers should still verify the current clearance process, operating hours, and required documents before departure.
Operations
The Guangzhou–Shenzhen and Shenzhen–Hong Kong sections have different design speeds. Departures, stops, journey times, trainsets, and seat classes from Guangzhou South, Shenzhen North, or Futian to Hong Kong West Kowloon vary by date and timetable; through services from other mainland cities also change. Check both China Railway 12306 and official MTR Intercity information for the actual travel date and stations.
Scenery Along the Way
The corridor crosses the Pearl River Delta urban region and links Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. Most of the Hong Kong section is underground, so views are limited on the cross-boundary approach. Hong Kong West Kowloon is in urban Kowloon; Victoria Harbour and Tsim Sha Tsui still require an onward walk or public transport route from the appropriate station exit.
Travel Tips
Required cross-boundary documents depend on the traveler's identity, nationality, residence status, and travel date, so an Exit-Entry Permit or passport is not a universal answer. Check current rules from China's National Immigration Administration, the Hong Kong Immigration Department, and the operator, and allow time for clearance at West Kowloon. Availability is never guaranteed; search China Railway 12306 or official MTR Intercity channels and confirm which documents the booking channel accepts.
