Plan this rail journey
The Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway is China's flagship intercity corridor. Use the route links below for ticket and timetable intent, compare the selected train's stopping pattern and seat classes, and confirm Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao before travel.
Route Overview
The Beijing–Shanghai HSR is a major Chinese high-speed rail trunk line running 1,318 km from Beijing South Station to Shanghai Hongqiao Station. It crosses Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shanghai, connecting cities including Jinan, Bengbu, and Nanjing. Opened in 2011, it is an important north–south corridor in the national high-speed rail network.
Operations
Selected services on the Beijing–Shanghai HSR can operate at up to 350 km/h. Departures, stops, journey times, trainsets, seat classes, and onboard amenities vary by timetable and individual service; not every train calls at the same stations or offers the same facilities. After choosing a travel date, check the actual service details on China Railway 12306.
Scenery Along the Way
The corridor runs from the North China Plain toward the lower Yangtze, with farmland, terrain, and cityscapes changing along the way. It crosses Shandong, Anhui, and Jiangsu and passes over the Yangtze in the Nanjing area before continuing to Shanghai. Mount Tai, historic Nanjing, and Jiangnan water towns are destinations in the wider corridor; travelers should not assume every attraction is visible from the train.
Travel Tips
Popular holiday and weekend services can sell out quickly, so use China Railway 12306 to check the current sales window, availability, and change or refund conditions. Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao are large hubs: confirm the full station name printed on the ticket and allow time for entry. Current baggage dimensions, weight and prohibited-item rules, as well as catering and charging availability, depend on 12306 rules and the selected train.
