For an ordinary issued mainland ticket, the railway refund charge generally rises as departure approaches. Request help through the original booking channel early; sending a request is not the same as completing the railway cancellation.

Railway rounding, a minimum charge where applicable, previously changed tickets and special cases can affect the amount. This table concerns the railway fare, not a promise to refund every service or payment charge in an agency order. Cross-border and special products can have different rules.

The 2026 mistaken-booking exception on 12306

12306 introduced a limited free-refund option for eligible mistaken purchases: payment completed within the last 30 minutes and departure at least four hours away. It applies to qualifying 12306 purchases, with one order per purchaser per calendar day; changed tickets, advance reservations and waitlist purchases are excluded. Do not assume a ChinaTrain order qualifies or that your agency payment time equals the railway purchase time. Ask the original seller immediately if you made an error.

Changes are not always free

A change depends on available inventory, ticket eligibility and the requested new journey. The railway’s expanded change rules can allow a later travel date within the sales window, including in some cases after the original departure, but additional change fees can apply. Fare differences are also settled. Do not rely on outdated advice that every change is free, or that missing the train automatically entitles you to a refund.

If you miss the train

Ordinary refunds are generally unavailable after the booked departure. Contact the seller or station staff immediately about an eligible change; some same-day options have a deadline at midnight on the original departure date. The exact alternative depends on the ticket and availability. Do not board a different service using the old reservation.

How to request a ChinaTrain change or refund

  • Find the order number, passenger concerned, original train and desired action.
  • Contact the support channel shown in the order and request the applicable fee breakdown and deadline.
  • Wait for confirmation that the cancellation or change has actually completed. A message sent near departure may not be processed in time.
  • Check the confirmed refund amount and method; railway refund approval, seller processing and the bank credit can occur at different times. Avoid starting a duplicate order until you understand the original status.

FAQ

Can I cancel free eight days before departure?

Standard mainland railway fares normally have no refund fee at least eight days before departure, but changed-ticket exceptions and separate seller charges must be checked.

Does the 30-minute free-refund rule apply to every ChinaTrain order?

No. It is a conditional 12306 mistaken-purchase service. Eligibility and the railway purchase time must be confirmed through the original booking channel.

Can I refund a missed train?

Ordinary refunds are generally unavailable after departure. Ask immediately whether an eligible change remains possible.

Is sending a refund request enough?

No. Wait for confirmation that the actual cancellation has completed and for the confirmed refund amount.
