Kunming · Dali · Lijiang: editorial journey concept with destination-themed artwork; not a route map, photograph or service guarantee.

Kunming, Dali and Lijiang form a useful rail-based Yunnan itinerary, but their railway stations are not interchangeable with their old towns or airports. Choose your overnight stops first, then compare the actual trains and local transfers for each leg.

KunmingDistinguish Kunming 昆明站 from Kunming South 昆明南站. Search results grouped by city can contain different stations.Compare your hotel or airport transfer to the station your train actually uses.
DaliDali 大理站 is separate from Dali Ancient City 大理古城.Arrange road transport to the old town or the specific Erhai hotel area.
LijiangLijiang 丽江站 is separate from Lijiang Old Town 丽江古城.Check the appropriate drop-off point for Dayan, Shuhe or your actual accommodation.

Use the exact Chinese station name in navigation and give your accommodation's full address when arranging a pickup. “Dali” and “Lijiang” cover much wider areas than the historic centers.

Choose a route that matches your stops

  • Kunming → Dali → Lijiang: useful when you want separate stays in both Dali and Lijiang. Search and book each travel leg for the intended date.
  • Kunming → Lijiang: compare direct services where available if you are skipping Dali, rather than adding an unnecessary connection.
  • A same-day connection: if direct availability is unsuitable, check the actual transfer station and margin. Do not mistake a change from Kunming to Kunming South for an internal station transfer.

A through ticket to Lijiang does not provide a multi-day sightseeing stop in Dali. If you intend to leave the journey and stay there, arrange tickets that match the separate legs. Train numbers, stops, fares and service frequency can change, so use the current search results instead of a fixed timetable from an old travel blog.

Getting from the train to an old-town hotel

Dali station and the old town are linked by road transport; the local tourism transport operator publishes a station-to-old-town service, but its current departure and pickup arrangements should be checked for your date. Erhai accommodation may lie in a different direction from the old town.

In Lijiang, local transport connects the station and old-town areas, but the final vehicle stop may not be your hotel door. Ask the hotel for the easiest luggage route and meeting point. Historic streets can make large wheeled cases inconvenient, so pack for the final walk as well as the train ride. Do not assume either city offers a walk from the station directly into the main old town.

Flights, late arrivals and sightseeing

If arriving by air in Kunming, allow for flight delay, arrival formalities and the journey to the correct railway station. For a late train arrival in Dali or Lijiang, confirm hotel reception and transport before paying. Avoid putting a timed mountain, cable-car or guided activity immediately after the scheduled train arrival.

A railway ticket does not include accommodation, airport transfers or scenic-area access unless explicitly stated in the product. Keep flexible time for road traffic and weather, and check local activity conditions independently.

Seats, tickets and return travel

Compare the classes actually sold for your train; do not infer the seat layout or speed from the letter alone. Confirm ticket issuance and carry the original booking document. See the seat-class guide, boarding checklist and holiday advice. Book the return plan with the same care as the outward journey.

FAQ

Which Kunming station should I choose?

Use the station shown for the selected train: Kunming and Kunming South are different. Compare the actual transfer from your accommodation or airport before booking.

Are Dali and Lijiang stations in their old towns?

No. Plan onward road transport and, where necessary, a final walk to the accommodation.

Can I stop in Dali for two nights on a Kunming–Lijiang ticket?

Do not treat a through ticket as a multi-day stopover ticket. Buy the separate journey legs that match your intended stays and dates.

Is Kunming–Dali–Lijiang the only sensible route?

No. It suits a stay in both places; if skipping Dali, compare available direct Kunming–Lijiang services and the whole journey.
