The standard railway ticket presale window is 15 days including the current day. Choosing a later travel date on an agency website does not mean railway tickets for that date have already been released or secured. Check the 12306 presale announcement and the current release time for your departure station; timetable changes or special services may differ.
Count the release date correctly
Under a 15-day inclusive window, a departure on 29 October normally enters the window on 15 October. This is a counting example, not a live availability statement. The sale begins at the applicable release time, and timetable adjustments or special services can affect what is offered. Always check the current 12306 announcement and the selected departure.
Release times vary by station
Tickets do not all go on sale at midnight. Use the official 12306 release-time lookup for the exact departure station and date. Beijing South and Beijing West, for example, are different stations. Plan in China Standard Time (UTC+8), especially if you are booking from another time zone.
An advance request is not an issued ticket
If a booking channel accepts your request before railway sales open, read its payment, cancellation and fulfillment terms. Such a request is an instruction to attempt booking when tickets become available, not reserved railway inventory or a guarantee. Only a final issued-ticket confirmation establishes your actual train and seat; a selected date or successful payment alone does not.
Unreleased, sold out and unavailable are different
- Outside the window: check the release date before treating missing results as sold out.
- Within the window but no seats: try a realistic alternative departure, seat class or nearby station after checking the transfer.
- Timetable not finalized or service absent: do not assume the same train operates every day.
- Waitlist: official 12306 waitlist fulfillment depends on availability; it is not an issued seat and should not be assumed to be offered by every seller.
Prepare before sales open
Confirm passport details, all child passengers, the correct stations and your contact email. Choose acceptable alternatives in advance, and check both directions of a return trip because their release dates differ. Avoid tight flight connections until the train is confirmed. If your order is processing, check its status before submitting another request for the same passenger and journey.
