From station to train: editorial diagram of key planning topics; not a photograph or official layout.

For a typical domestic railway e-ticket journey, travel with the original identity document used to book and the confirmed train details. A booking request or payment receipt alone is not evidence that a railway ticket has been issued.

Before you leave for the station

  • Confirm the ticket is issued, then check date, train number, full departure station, arrival station, carriage and seat or berth.
  • Bring the same original passport used for a passport booking. Keep the journey details available offline to help staff locate the record.
  • Check whether your booking instructions require an unresolved identity check or a counter visit, and allow extra time for it.
  • For a first visit to a large station, plan to reach the railway entrance about 60 minutes early; add time for holidays or assistance. This is a planning recommendation, not a universal railway cut-off.

1. Enter the correct departure area

Follow signs for the railway entrance and departures rather than the arrival exit. Show the original booking document for the real-name check. Some checkpoints can read supported passports; if a machine does not work for your document, ask for the staffed lane. Do not repeatedly queue at an unsuitable gate.

2. Complete security screening

Passengers and belongings are subject to inspection. Put bags through the screening equipment and follow staff instructions for the personal check. Keep small valuables together and collect all items before moving on. Railway restrictions differ from airport restrictions; check the railway security guide before packing.

3. Find your train and boarding gate

Use the train number, travel date and departure time to find the correct row on the display. The train's final destination may be beyond your own stop. Confirm the waiting area, gate and boarding status, and watch for changes. Gate and platform information may become available later than the ticket itself.

Stay near the appropriate gate once boarding approaches. Gates close before departure, and the timing varies by station and service. Follow the displayed cut-off; arrival at the building before the train leaves does not mean boarding remains open.

4. Pass the gate and find the carriage

Present the required document at the gate or to staff. An itinerary sheet, order email or screenshot is a reference, not a replacement for the boarding credential. After the gate, follow the designated route to the platform, check the train number again, and use carriage signs to locate your car. Keep clear of the platform edge and do not rush across closed areas.

Board the carriage indicated when possible, place luggage safely, and use the seat or berth shown on the issued ticket. If unsure or unable to reach the correct carriage safely, ask railway staff for directions.

5. Keep your document for arrival

You may need the same identity document to leave the destination station. If connecting to another train, check for a permitted transfer route before exiting. For onward transport and station layouts, see the station guide.

If a gate rejects the document or has closed

Ask staff to check the ticket record, document match and current boarding status. Do not assume an email means the gate must admit you, and do not buy a duplicate ticket before the issue is understood. If you miss the train, consult your booking channel or the station about the applicable change rules; do not board a different service without a valid ticket for it.

FAQ

Do I need a printed ticket for a domestic e-ticket journey?

Normally you use the original valid identity document linked to the e-ticket. Follow any specific railway instructions; a printed itinerary or receipt is not itself a boarding ticket.

Can I use a photograph of my passport?

Carry the original valid document used for booking. A photograph or booking screenshot does not replace it.

Can foreign passports use automatic gates?

Some checkpoints support certain passports. If yours is not accepted, ask staff for the manual checking lane.

Exactly how many minutes before departure do gates close?

It varies by station and train. Follow the station display and announcements, and reach the gate well before the stated cut-off.
