For ordinary mainland services, the published allowance is 20 kg for most adults and 10 kg for children. On EMU trains, each item’s length, width and height combined must not exceed 130 cm; a bag that fits on an aircraft may still exceed this rail limit. These weight and dimension limits are published in the 12306 carry-on luggage rules; recheck before travel and consult separate rules for cross-border services such as Hong Kong trains.
Check both weight and dimensions

| Rule | Published mainland allowance |
|---|---|
| Most adult passengers | 20 kg total free carry-on allowance |
| Children | 10 kg total free carry-on allowance |
| EMU services, including typical G/D/C trains | Length + width + height per item: at most 130 cm |
| Other passenger trains | At most 160 cm combined per item; rod-shaped articles have a separate 200 cm limit |
| Any single item | At most 20 kg |
These are published limits, not a promise of spare luggage space. Measure the full outside dimensions, including protruding wheels and handles. A different rule may apply to cross-border services.
Strollers and mobility aids
A folded stroller used by an accompanying infant and a folding wheelchair used by a passenger who needs it can be carried free outside the normal allowance under the published conditions. Keep them folded and stored as directed. Large sports equipment and unusual items should be checked with the railway before travel; do not assume every station offers same-day checked luggage.
Pack for security, not airport assumptions
Bags are screened at station entry. Sharp tools, flammable products, aerosols and batteries have category-specific restrictions. Do not copy an airline liquids allowance or assume every liquid is banned. Read the security guide for the current railway limits and check unusual equipment before leaving your hotel.
Where to store your bags
Use the luggage spaces available on your actual train. Large cases may need a carriage-end rack; lighter bags may fit overhead or in other designated spaces. Never place heavy items where they can fall, block exits or take another passenger’s seat. Keep passports, valuables and medication with you. Storage space near sleeper berths varies by train type.
If your bag exceeds the limit
Arrange a smaller bag or a suitable delivery option before the journey. Staff may refuse non-compliant items at boarding or apply railway handling rules; paying a charge onboard is not a guaranteed alternative. For multi-city trips, compare the effort of hotel transfers and station stairs before packing an oversized suitcase.
